Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) include a range of diseases such as cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease, aortic atherosclerosis, and peripheral artery disease, which develop based on which arteries are affected. ASCVD develops when deposits – called plaque – collect in the walls of the arteries. This can lead to narrowing or hardening of the arteries, resulting in poor blood flow to organs that can cause serious complications.
While ASCVD is a serious condition that can lead to fatal complications, it can be prevented or delayed by managing risk factors. This film takes a look at atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases including their risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options. To learn more, visit agingresearch.org/ASCVD.
